Carl spent 15 years as a photojournalist for Newhouse News Service, the Times-Picayune, Helsingin Sanomat, and The Providence Journal. His photos have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, the Sunday Magazine of the Times of London, The Washington Post, TIME, and Newsweek. Despite his background in photojournalism, his primary focus is on long-term documentary projects.

His story on one woman's struggle with breast cancer received a Clarion Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. Images from the series are in the show Beauty CULTure at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.

Chica Barbie was recently exhibited at the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, and was added to the collection of the Portland Art Museum. It was the subject of a recent interviews on RESOLVE, and The New York Times LENS, was exhibited at the Farmani Gallery in New York as part of the show Select Gender and PhotoLUST at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. It received the Blue Earth Alliance Prize for Best Project Photography,was a finalist for the Book Award at the New York Photo Festival and was one of six finalists for Photolucida's 2009 Critical Mass Book Award and a finalist in the 2010 Photography Book Now competition. The project was featured in burn magazine and shown at the LOOKbetween festival in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Carl lives in Denver, Colorado, with his wife and daughter. No dog. Daughter is enough.
